FAQ

WHEN IS THE FIRST DAY OF PRACTICE?

The first day of practice is August 12th, 2019. Plans for practice are TBA.

I'M CONFUSED ON ALL OF THESE SUMMER RUNNING PLANS.

We have two cross country camps: the first one is from May 26-29 and the second one is from July 13-17. Both of these require you to register and for you to pay. There is also a summer camp done through Big River Running from July 27-31 More information can be found on the Summer Running page.

WHAT'S A PRACTICE CARD? WHY DO I NEED ONE?

You receive a practice card when you turn in your physical to the Athletic Office. You fill it out with phone numbers of people to call in case of a medical emergency-the card is kept with Coach Woodard. You turn it in on the first day of practice.

You must go to the Athletic Office the week of July 23-26 to receive your practice card-that is the only week you can. You can go anytime from 8-3.

You must have your practice card on August 12 in order to practice.

WHAT IS 'LATE NIGHT?' WHY DO I HAVE TO HAVE A TALENT?

Late Night is a night of team bonding activities. The date for this year's late night is August 19th, from 4:30-7:30. The team is asked to chip in a few dollars to order pizza for dinner. The main event of the night is the talent show! Every girl is expected to have a talent - but it can be as serious or as silly as you would like! We have had everything from singing, to cello playing, to fortune telling. At the core, Late Night is a night of fun and a way to bond with your team early on in the season.

WHAT TIME DOES PRACTICE START? WHAT TIME DOES PRACTICE END?

Practice starts promptly at 3:00. Practice ends whenever we are done for the day-normally about 5:30.

WHERE DO WE MEET FOR PRACTICE?

We meet right outside the athletic building at KHS.

I CAN'T MAKE IT TO A PRACTICE/MEET. WHAT SHOULD I DO?

Missing is not a good plan-please try to change your schedule if at all possible. If not and you know ahead of time, talk to Coach Woodard a few days in advance and remind her the day before. If you're leaving school because of an emergency (i.e., sickness, family emergency, etc.), Coach Woodard can be reached at 314-496-2555. It is recommended that the runner contacts Coach.

Most days, we will not be finished until 5:30. Please do not have things such as work or clubs interfere.

WHAT TIME DOES THE BUS LEAVE FOR RACES?

What time the bus leaves for races depends on the race. Runners will be told what time they should be at KHS throughout the week-runners should be at the school early to help load team related items onto the bus.

WHAT SHOULD PARENTS WEAR TO RACES?

Cross country isn't like most sports-while the athletes are running, so are the spectators! Parents should wear clothes (and shoes!) they feel comfortable running around in.

WHAT ARE THESE RUNNING LOGS AND WHY DO I HAVE TO DO THEM?

The running logs are there to be able to track your progress throughout the summer and the season. They are also there for the runners to see any trends or issues with their running. You have to do them because your Coaches said so. If you have a problem, check with Coach Woodard. She can't wait to talk to you about it.

HOW MANY HOURS OF SLEEP SHOULD I HAVE A NIGHT?

At least nine hours. Remember to take care of yourself - sleep is one of the most important things to a runner (and a student). Please be realistic about your fall schedule and decide if cross country is the right fit for you.

HOW DO I KNOW IF I'M EATING ENOUGH/EATING THE RIGHT FOOD?

Nutritional needs vary by runner. If you feel as though you are having issues with nutrition, please contact Coach Woodard at gina.woodard@kirkwoodschools.org.

I'M NEW TO KIRKWOOD. HOW WILL I KNOW IF CROSS COUNTRY IS THE RIGHT FIT FOR ME?

First of all, welcome to Kirkwood! We're happy you are thinking about joining our program. We have two running camps, May 26-28 and July 13-17. We also meet every Tuesday/Wednesday/Thursday in Kirkwood park, the picnic tables right by the playground, for summer training. If you have any more questions, feel free to email Coach Woodard at gina.woodard@kirkwoodschools.org.

WHAT DO I DO IF I HAVE QUESTIONS ABOUT THE WEBSITE?
